Japanese Christian Terms: Prayer

In this post we’ll go over the meaning of the word Prayer (祈り) in Japanese. I also list out extra vocab, example sentences, as well as links to grammar points I use to help deepen your understanding.

Vocabulary:

1. 信徒 (しんと) – believer, adherent
2. よく – often

Grammar:

1. ~たら – if
2. ~ほうがいい – should, it’d be better to
3. ~と思う (おもう) – to think

Example Sentence:

信徒だったら、よく祈りをしたほうがいいと思う。

I think, you should pray often if you’re a believer.

Example Verses:

“呼び求めるわたしに答えてください わたしの正しさを認めてくださる神よ。 苦難から解き放ってください 憐れんで、祈りを聞いてください。” – 詩編‬ ‭4:2‬

“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.” – Psalms 4:1
