Japanese Christian Terms: Grace

In this post I’ll go over the meaning of the Japanese word, Megumi, which means “Grace” in English. Although the Katakana グレイス could be used, the kanji for grace in Japanese is 恵み.

In the below chart, you’ll see the kanji for Grace and its Hiragana. I also list out extra vocab, example sentences, as well as links to grammar points I use to help deepen your understanding.

Vocabulary:

    1. 私たち (わたしたち) – we, us
    2. 主 (しゅ) – lord, chief, master
    3. 永遠 (えいえん) – eternity
    4. 命 (いのち) – life, life force
    5. 受け取る (うけとる) – to receive, get, accept
    6. 出来る (できる) – to be able to do

    Grammar:

    1. ~だけで – just by, just by doing

    Example Sentence:

    私たちは主の恵みのだけで永遠の命を受け取るのが出来ます。

    It’s only by the Lord’s grace that we can receive eternal life.

    Example Verses:

    “事実、あなたがたは、恵みにより、信仰によって救われました。このことは、自らの力によるのではなく、神の賜物です。 行いによるのではありません。それは、だれも誇ることがないためなのです。” – ‭‭エフェソの信徒への手紙‬ ‭2:8-9

    “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9
