Japanese Christian Terms: Holy Spirit

In this post we’ll go over the meaning of the word Holy Spirit (聖霊) in Japanese. I also list out extra vocab, example sentences, as well as links to grammar points I use to help deepen your understanding.

Vocab:

1. イエス様 (イエスさま) – Jesus Christ
2. 救う(すくう) – to rescue from, to save
3. 受け取る(うけとる) – to receive, to get
4. 信頼・する (しんらい・する) – to trust in, to have faith in

Grammar:

1. ~時 (とき) – when

Example Sentence:

イエス様に信頼する時、救って聖霊を受け取る。

When you place your faith in Jesus, you will be saved and receive the Holy Spirit.

Example Verses:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19

“だから、あなたがたは行って、すべての民をわたしの弟子にしなさい。彼らに父と子と聖霊の名によって洗礼を授け、” – マタイによる福音書‬ ‭28:19‬
