EU to Unveil Plans for a Digital Wallet

The EU is set to unveil detailed plans for a bloc-wide digital wallet on Wednesday following requests from member states to find a safe way for citizens to access public and private services online.

A digital wallet set to be unveiled by the EU soon seems to me to be a type of universal digital ID that I’ve reported on in the past. The last time I discussed about something like this was year when we learned that Mastercard joined ID2020.

In the article, I noted Mastercard’s goal in working towards what seemed to many to be a universal “tracking” system packaged into an ID. In the article I included a tweet of their announced partnership with Microsoft in 2018 for this initiative. They listed “voting, driving, applying for a job, renting a home, getting married, and boarding a plane” as activities that require an individual to prove their identity. Their solution? A system that ties all of this together.

Since then, this thought process hasn’t faded away but is instead becoming a reality especially as various nations such as China adopts digital currency, something that could easily be a part of a digital ID. With the EU’s digital wallet, we’re essentially seeing the same idea marketed to us. Below is a list of some of the functionality the digital wallets will have:

  • Securely store payment details and passwords
  • Allow citizens from all 27 countries to log into local government websites or pay utility bills
  • Users can store official documents such as a driver’s licence

The wallet will not be mandatory but they do tout its apparent benefits stating, “Using the wallet was not compulsory, those involved said, but citizens who chose to sign up would benefit from an extra-secure digital ecosystem and greater flexibility ideal for post-pandemic life.”

To me, I believe that technology such as this may be laying the groundwork for the mark of the beast system that will come out during the tribulation. From scripture, we’re clearly given the context as to when the mark of the beast will come to ultimate fruition – during the 7 year tribulation. Before the tribulation even starts, the antichrist must first be revealed and confirm a covenant for a “week” (7 years).

Until the “beast” himself shows up on the world stage, there will be no “mark of the beast”. However, as we see technology and ideas that seem to be laying the groundwork for the mark of the beast system future system, it should show us how close this portion of the bible is to being fulfilled, and even closer, the rapture of the church.

EU set to unveil digital wallet fit for post-Covid life

Financial Times: The digital wallet would securely store payment details and passwords and allow citizens from all 27 countries to log into local government websites or pay utility bills using a single recognised identity, said people with direct knowledge of the plans.

The EU-wide app, which can be accessed via fingerprint or retina scanning among other methods, will also serve as a vault where users can store official documents such as a driver’s licence. Using the wallet was not compulsory, those involved said, but citizens who chose to sign up would benefit from an extra-secure digital ecosystem and greater flexibility ideal for post-pandemic life.

“The new digital ID will give every European the keys to their digital twin,” Thierry Breton, and EU commissioner in charge of digital policy, said in a speech earlier this year.

In order to protect citizens, EU officials will force a structural separation preventing companies which access user data from using it for any other commercial activity, such as marketing new products.

Brussels is engaged in discussions with member states to provide guidelines on technical standards for the rollout of the digital wallet, which is expected to be fully operational in about a year.

The new proposals are part of a review of existing EU-wide electronic identification and follows a consultation on the “drivers and barriers” for the deployment of a digital wallet.

The existing system has experienced low take-up with only 19 countries introducing digital IDs and not all of them are compatible with one another. Ultimately, member states will decide how to implement the system. Read More
